HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is a hormone which is produced when a women is pregnant. Although the hormone was originally used for solving fertility problems in both and women, it is most widely known for its use in weight loss. Even though you may have just heard about the HCG protocol, you might not know it was first developed by Dr. ATW Simeons in the 1950′s. Since then, the HCG diet is something of a craze and is known to be safe as well as extremely effective.

If you are interested in doing the HCG diet, then you need to know how it works and what you need to do to ensure that you are releasing the optimal amount of fat. However, before all of that, you should also know that the HCG drops do not work alone and that they are only effective if used with a restricted diet plan. Basically, the drops help to suppress your appetite and while on the low calorie diet, your body starts to use up the abnormal fat reservoir in your body as energy. It is quite normal for people who are on the HCG diet to lose up to 1-2 pounds on a daily basis and some may even experience a greater reduction in weight in the first few days of the second phase.

These phases are according to those that were set down by Dr. Simeons when he first developed it so it is crucial that you follow each step properly.

Phase 1:

Because this is only a 3-phase diet, you should know that it important that you take them all very seriously. The first phase is where you need to eat very high calorie and fatty foods. In essence, you are filling yourself up with fat for 2 days so that they can be broken down later. Along with the high calorie intake, you also need to make sure that you are taking the HCG drops 3 times per day. The drops have to be taken during this loading phase because when you eat the fatty foods, the body will attempt to store it but the HCG hormone will stop it from doing so.

Phase 2:

This is perhaps the most challenging phases of them all as this is when you will need to restrict your diet to 500-1200 calories per day. It requires you to have lean protein such as fish or chicken but discourages milks and other such fatty items. While in the second phase, you will only be allowed to have two full meals at lunch and dinner and replace breakfast with a cup of tea or coffee. This phase will last for around 26-60 days and once again, you have to combine the diet with the HCG drops.

Phase 3:

Once you have successfully completed phases 1 and 2, and you have reached your weight loss goal, you will now slowly re-introduce sugar and grains back into your diet. You will also return to your normal calories intake which is around 1500-2000 calories/day, depending on your height and activity level. However, it is recommended that you keep your diet fat free as much as possible and refrain from having dairy products.
